Is Invisalign® Right For Me?

Many people avoid orthodontic treatment because they are worried about the look and feel of braces. Thankfully, traditional braces are smaller than ever and some patients also have the option of choosing an alternative teeth straightening solution known as Invisalign®. District Dental is a North Shore dentist providing Invisalign® in North Vancouver and the surrounding areas, and we are excited to let you know a bit about what Invisalign® is, how it works and what orthodontic issues it can be used to correct.

What Is Invisalign®? Invisalign® is a teeth straightening system which brings your teeth and bite into alignment using a series of clear plastic trays that are worn on the teeth. Your dentist will first take an impression of your teeth that will be used to determine how the teeth need to be moved in order to be brought into alignment. You will then receive your aligners, as well as instructions on how to use them. The aligners are progressive and typically worn for about two weeks at a time before moving on to the next set in the series. What Are the Benefits of Invisalign®? Invisalign® offers many attractive benefits for adults and older teens that are looking for an effective alternative to traditional braces, such as:

  • Comfort: Unlike traditional braces, aligners take very little getting used to, are comfortable to wear and rarely cause irritation inside the mouth.

  • Speed: Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign® is often of a far shorter duration than with traditional braces. Treatment typically takes about one year, though in some cases can take as little as six months.

  • Convenience: Aligner trays can be removed and put back on with ease, allowing you to eat, drink and brush your teeth without any added inconvenience.

  • Discreteness: Perhaps the main reason that people initially start to consider Invisalign® is that the aligners are so discreet that they often go unnoticed. If you've been avoiding orthodontic treatment because you are worried about how braces would look, then you should definitely consider Invisalign®.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign®? While Invisalign® is not meant for children, it can be a good solution for adults and older teens with healthy and fully developed teeth and gums. Aligners are not the best treatment in cases of severe misalignment, but it is always worthwhile to ask your dentist if they might work for you. Treatment has been successfully used to correct orthodontic issues such as:

  • Crooked teeth

  • Misaligned teeth

  • Gaps between teeth

  • Crowded teeth

  • Bite misalignment
